Christmas decoration make us happier! Why?

This year we decorate earlier!

Although we are in the first days of November the xmas mood is already here with people starting decorating. What do you believe? Is it early or not? The sure thing is that Christmas decorations make our mood brighter and the sooner we start decorating the happier we will be. According to the psychoanalyst, Steve McKeown, the fact that Christmas decorations bring joy has to do with nostalgia.

“Although there could be a number of symptomatic reasons why someone would want to obsessively put up decorations early, it’s most commonly for nostalgic reasons, either to relive the magic or to compensate for past neglect.” “Decorations are simply an anchor or pathway to those old childhood magical emotions of excitement. So putting up those Christmas decorations early extends the excitement!”

Psychotherapist, and author, Amy Morin also mentions that nostalgia connects people to their past, helping them understand who they really are. It is a bittersweet feeling because it brings back memories even with people who are not with us now, but the holidays is still a chance to connect again. In addition, altruism increases in the month of December and as people start gifting to others, making donations and going to charities it makes them happy. Also, a study from the University of Utah, showed that Christmas outdoor decoration is a way of communicating with our neighbors, that our home is accessible and friendly to them.

Beyond any shadow of a doubt, our need for decoration is also biological. Dealing with adornment and then admiring the result increases the levels of dopamine in the body, the famous hormone of joy. It produces joy, optimism, and excitement. And of course, at the same time, it brings us closer to the people around us, from family to neighbors. Everyone looks at the Christmas tree and smiles.

So in a world full of stress and anxiety, do not hesitate to decorate a little earlier this year, with your friends and family. Create a beautiful atmosphere, light candles, put on music, bake some yummy Christmas-shaped treats, and live your most beautiful holiday memories again – we need it more than ever! Besides, experts emphasize that early decorations are proven to raise the levels of joy in the body so you have an excuse!
