The reboot is coming, but where is “Samantha”?

After a decade of speculation since the release of “Sex and the City 2” in 2010, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis will come back to their iconic roles in a new show with star Sara Jessica Parker herself (Carrie Bradshaw) to confirm the revival of Sex and the City on her Instagram account posting a teaser video with shots of the NYC skyline and the hashtag #SATCNextChapter while commenting “I couldn’t help but wonder… where are they now?”. Nixon, who plays Miranda Hobbes, also shared “You, me, New York…anything is possible” and  Davis, who plays Charlotte York, did the same thing with her own post while texting, “Anything is possible…Meet you there!”

Warner Bros. has also officially announced the great news about the HBO Max original series with the title “AND JUST LIKE THAT” which is scheduled to begin filming in late spring in New York. The iconic tv-series, we all gals loved from the first episode, burst onto TV screens in 1998 introducing four thirty-something New York gals building their careers, leading their fascinating love and sex lives, while keeping a strong friendship among them and boasting for a magnificent haute couture closet we all were jealous for. The tv series ended in 2004, after six glamorous seasons, and produced two more movies in 2008 and 2010. Now the storyline of the 10-episode-long show, with 30 minutes duration each, follows the “complicated reality of life and friendship” of Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda in their 50s,  with the HBO Max’s Head of Original Content Sarah Aubrey to highlight in a recent press release:

“I grew up with these characters, and I can’t wait to see how their story has evolved in this new chapter, with the honesty, poignancy, humor, and the beloved city that has always defined them” she said.

Even SJP expressed her enthusiasm for the new episodes according to Page Six, showing her curiosity but also her love for the characters wondering what they are doing today in a whole new era or else the social media age, where everything changes so fast!

“I’d like to see where all of them are. I’m curious, the world has changed even since the movie… technology and social media.” Add to that, “sexual politics and the #MeToo movement and Time’s Up… I think Carrie Bradshaw would just be so greedy to share her feelings and thoughts.”

But where is Kim Cattrall, who played the powerful and scandalous Samantha Jones? Fans have already expressed that there is no Sex and the City without Samantha, but according to Page Six, it seems that the actress is not involved in the core cast, with her expressing multiple times that she is not interested in the reunion. According to People, she said:

“I’m lucky enough to have choice, not that I haven’t worked for it, but I have it,” … “It’s something I feel very lucky to have and I’m very protective of it. I wouldn’t be any good doing something that I really didn’t want to do.”

She also stated on The Guardian in 2019 that she had no problem with them recasting her role while sharing that she was done after the end of their second movie. The diva loves to enjoy what she is doing, and, as it seems, SATC is definitely not among these things.

“It was a blessing in so many ways but after the second movie I’d had enough,” … “I couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t just replace me with another actress instead of wasting time bullying. No means no.” “I don’t want to be in a situation for even an hour where I’m not enjoying myself.”

After Cattrall’s public comments that she is not going to participate in the most-anticipated  SATC revival, Sara Jessica Parker replied to a series of Instagram comments highlighting that she did not “dislike her” and that she would be missed. So what do you think? Would you watch “Sex and the City” without Samantha or not?

“Samantha isnt part of this story,”…”But she will always be part of us. No matter where we are or what we do.”
